What is DUI? Why DUI is very dangerous? What are the penalties for driving under the influence?
DUI is short for Driving under the Influence (of alcohol or drugs). This is very common violation in the whole world. The lives lost because of DUI are too many to count. It is a major contributor for injuries and fatalities in every country worldwide.
In every 4 DUI offenders there is 1 fatality (Australian Data). That ratio of 4:1 is the proof that driving under the influence of alcohol is very dangerous and life-threatening, not only for the drivers but also the innocent lives that becomes a collateral damage when an accident occurs. So when you know to yourself that you are not capable of driving because of the presence of the alcohol in your system, STOP, REST, and be SOBER before driving your car.
In
Australia, there is a law for drunk driving. Road Traffic Act 1974 outlines the
different drunk driving offences and associated penalties. If you are charged
with drunk driving, the penalty that you may receive is either an infringement
with loss of demerit points, or a notice to appear in court for the Magistrate
to determine the penalty to be charged to you. You will need a traffic lawyer to defend you in front
of the Magistrate, which is you know a very hassle thing to do.
Since
now we know what DUI means, what it brings, and the penalties by doing it, we
should contemplate first before turning your ignition keys. Am I under the
influence? Ask yourself. If you know that you are not sober, DO NOT DRIVE THAT
CAR!
